I am Going to England

Hi, I’m Sarah and I would like to share with you a little of the background to the book I am Going to England. 

I first welcomed foreign students into my home in 1975 – I had two small children – my husband was an airline pilot so spent several weeks at a time in all parts of the world, at the beginning I welcomed the opportunity of earning my own money without leaving my children as I felt that I had to give them the security of one full time parent. 

However it soon became more, we all enjoyed the cross section of Worldwide Visitors and things that we learnt from them and of course what they learnt from us. I was, and am still amazed that the millions of Visitors that come to England have no idea where to go for help should they need assistance or how everyday England works. The language or lack of from both sides is a problem as well as the large differences in cultures.  

 I stopped hosting in the early eighties due to moving out of Stratford upon Avon plus the arrival of a new baby but still kept in touch with many of my foreign friends. I moved back to Stratford in 2000 and became a reborn Host Mother, as well as giving English Conversation lessons which brought to the fore a lot of the same problems that the visitors had faced in the 70’s so was persuaded  to write a book and this is why.
